Meatsmith Co-op is a producer- and worker-owned meat processing cooperative, with the goal to expand access to humane on-farm slaughter and whole-carcass butchery for producers in Lafayette, Green, Iowa, Dane, Grant, and Rock Counties.
We are currently launching a membership drive for livestock producers. Members will have a say in how the Co-op runs and earn a share of any profits, among other benefits. In the start-up phase, Meatsmith Co-op will be providing only custom-exempt (not-for-sale) processing, but plans to offer three distinct services in the near future:
State-inspected meat processing at their facility. (2024)
A state-inspected mobile slaughter unit. (2024)
Group marketing and order fulfillment services for members. (2025-26)
Additionally, the Co-op will be participating in the Cooperative Interstate Shipment (CIS) program as soon as possible, allowing producers to sell their meat anywhere in the country.
The cost to become a producer-member is currently $500.
